Targeted Antibiotic Therapy for Gum Disease

Even after a thorough deep cleaning, bacteria can remain in gum pockets and continue to cause inflammation and tissue damage. Arestin (minocycline hydrochloride) is a locally applied antibiotic that is placed directly into the infected pockets immediately after scaling and root planing.

Unlike oral antibiotics, Arestin delivers a high concentration of medication directly to the site of infection — where it is needed most — while minimizing systemic side effects. The microspheres slowly release the antibiotic over several weeks, providing sustained antibacterial activity during the critical healing period.

At Accent Family Dentistry in Angier, NC, Dr. Brenda Gong uses Arestin as part of a comprehensive periodontal treatment protocol for patients with moderate to advanced gum disease.

How Arestin Is Applied

Arestin application is quick and painless. Immediately after your deep cleaning, Dr. Gong uses a small applicator to place the Arestin microspheres directly into the gum pockets. The microspheres adhere to the pocket walls and slowly release minocycline over the following weeks.

After Arestin placement, you should avoid touching the treated areas for 12 hours, avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for a week, and avoid flossing the treated areas for 10 days. Dr. Gong will provide complete aftercare instructions.

FAQs

Arestin Antibiotic Treatment in Angier, NC — Frequently Asked Questions

No. Arestin is applied after deep cleaning while the area is still numb from local anesthesia. The application itself is painless.

Arestin microspheres slowly biodegrade over approximately 14–21 days, releasing minocycline throughout this period. You do not need to have them removed.

Coverage for Arestin varies by insurance plan. Some plans cover it as part of periodontal treatment; others do not. Our team will verify your benefits before treatment.

Because Arestin is applied locally in very small amounts, systemic side effects are rare. Some patients experience mild tooth sensitivity or gum tenderness in the treated area. If you have a known allergy to tetracycline antibiotics, inform Dr. Gong before treatment.

Clinical studies show that Arestin used in conjunction with scaling and root planing reduces pocket depth significantly more than scaling and root planing alone. It is an evidence-based treatment that meaningfully improves periodontal outcomes.
